How the power zone widget works in engo3

How the power zone widget works in engo3

engo3 puts your power zone in your line of sight, red to green, zone 1 to 7. Here is exactly how that works, what shows up in your HUD, and where the current limits are.

The short version

Your power meter does not pair to your glasses. It pairs to your Garmin Edge or Garmin Watch, the same way it already does today. engo3 reads the raw power number your Garmin device is already receiving, checks it against the zone boundaries you set yourself in the engo3 companion app, and displays your zone in your HUD, alongside your other ride metrics.

One power meter. One Garmin device. Your zones, set once in the companion app.

The data flow, step by step

  1. Your power meter talks to your Garmin device. A crank, pedal, or hub based power meter pairs directly to your Garmin Edge or Garmin Watch over ANT+ or Bluetooth. This pairing works exactly as it always has. engo3 is not part of it.
  2. Your Garmin device receives your power number. Watts, live, the same reading it already shows today when you look down at your power field. engo3 does not change this reading.
  3. engo3 reads that power number from your Garmin device. Your glasses connect to the same Garmin Edge or Watch your power meter is paired to, the same connection engo3 already uses for radar, pace, and your other data fields.
  4. engo3 checks it against your zones and colors your HUD. Zone 1 to 7, red to green, based on the boundaries you've set in the Power Zone widget in the companion app, not on any FTP or zone setting on your Garmin device.

Why this matters: your Garmin device doesn't calculate the zone engo3 shows you, it only supplies the raw power number. The zone boundaries live in the engo3 companion app, so they're yours to set, and to keep up to date as your fitness changes, independent of whatever FTP or zone structure your Garmin device uses for its own screen.

What you see in the HUD

  • Your current zone, 1 to 7
  • Color, red to green, matching the zone
  • If connection is working between your power meter and your Garmin device

No separate app to check mid-ride, no extra screen to configure once it's set up. The power zone widget sits on your HUD screen alongside your radar alerts, pace, and the rest of your ride data.

Setting it up

  1. Pair your power meter to your Garmin Edge or Garmin Watch, exactly as you would without engo3.
  2. Pair your engo3 to that same Garmin device through the companion app, if you haven't already.
  3. In the companion app, add the Power Zone widget to one of your data screens, the same way you'd add any other data field.
  4. Open the Power Zone widget's settings and set your zone boundaries manually. This step doesn't happen automatically, and it's separate from any FTP or zone setting on your Garmin device.
  5. Start your ride. Your power zone shows up on the screen where you placed the widget.

If you already ride with a power meter and a Garmin device, pairing is nothing new. The one thing to do the first time is add the widget to a screen and set your zones in the companion app. Once that's done, it stays configured for every ride after.

Compatibility

Power meters. engo3 doesn't pair to a specific brand of power meter, it reads whatever power number your Garmin Edge or Watch already receives. In practice, that means it works with any ANT+ or Bluetooth power meter your Garmin device recognizes as a Power sensor, crank based, pedal based, or hub based, among them Garmin Rally and Vector, Stages Cycling, Favero Assioma, Quarq, SRM, ROTOR INpower, 4iiii Precision, and Wahoo POWRLINK. If your Garmin device already displays a power field today, engo3 will read that same field.

Garmin devices. Currently confirmed to work without issue on Edge 540, 840, 1040, 1050, and Edge Explore. Edge Explore 2 is not compatible.

Apple Watch. The power zone screen is not yet available on iOS. If you pair engo3 with an Apple Watch, power zone data will not display in your HUD at this time.

Known limitation: Garmin Edge Series 30 (530 / 830)

If you ride with an Edge 530 or Edge 830, there is a sensor limit worth knowing before you head out.

These two models can lose connection to sensors mid-ride when too many are paired at once. A power meter on its own, or a power meter plus one other sensor, works fine. A power meter plus a cadence sensor plus a radar, all paired at the same time, carries a meaningfully higher risk of a dropped connection partway through your ride.

This is not a fault in engo3 or in your power meter. It's a limitation of the Edge 530 and 830 themselves, confirmed by Garmin support, and it exists independently of engo3. We're keeping these models on our compatibility list because removing them would also block the data field for riders already using it. If you ride an Edge 530 or 830 with a full sensor setup, expect the occasional dropout, and reach out to us if you want help prioritizing which sensors to keep paired.

FAQ

Do I need engo3 Cyclist specifically, or does this work on any engo3?
Power zone display runs on the full engo3 platform, not just engo3 Cyclist. engo3 Cyclist adds a wider frame built for road and gravel positions, but the power zone widget itself works the same way across the engo3 range.

Does engo3 pull my zones from my Garmin FTP automatically?
No. Your Garmin device may use its own FTP setting for its own screens, but engo3's zones come only from what you set in the Power Zone widget in the companion app. If you update your FTP on your Garmin, update your zones in the companion app separately to match.

How do I set or change my zone boundaries?
In the engo3 companion app, open the Power Zone widget and enter your boundaries there. There's nothing to configure on your Garmin device for this, and nothing engo3 sets for you automatically.

Can I use any power meter brand?
Yes, as long as your Garmin Edge or Watch recognizes it as a Power sensor and displays a power field on its own. engo3 reads that same field regardless of the power meter brand.

What if my power data shows up on my Garmin but not in my HUD?
In the companion app, check that the Power Zone widget has been added to one of your data screens, that your zone boundaries are set, that your engo3 is paired to the same Garmin Edge or Watch your power meter is connected to, and that you're on the latest engo3 software.
